Software

NoteBig Change with MacOS 27 (Golden Gate)

From MacOS 27 on a lot of formerly supported applications will need Rosetta to run and it is already announced that with the next major version (MacOS 28) also Rosetta wil not supported any more. For that reason, we decided to say Good-Bye to ActiveTcl from activestate.com and Python from python.org.
The new way is to go on with homebrew for Tcl/Tk and python.

Please read the installation sections for MacOS in the manuals of the packages.

Mathtools

A set of educational software for visualization of applied mathematics as

  • cellular automata
  • fractals
  • iterated function systems (IFS)
  • parabola maps
  • solving of ordinary differential equations and slope fields of those
  • linear, non-linear, parameterized functions

The package is built on the base of Tcl/TK and GNU-C.
It is developed and tested on OpenSuSE Linux and is ported to run also on Microsoft Windows and MacOS platforms, were 64-bit architectures are assumed.
For the mentioned three operating systems see details at the according section of the MathTools Manual

Linux

Nothing special to do. Just take care that (at least) python3.10 with sympy is installed and follow the instructions in the manual.
MathTools 1.5.1 for Linux

Windows

To achieve the analytics in the Slope toolbox you need to take care of a Python environment on your computer. If no Python installation is made available for Slope some analyses are done by numerics and some will be missing. We found the most suitable way to get Python is installing Cygwin from www.cygwin.com . Please follow the installation procedure for the basic Cygwin system and take care to add python3.12 (at least) and the sympy package.
MathTools 1.5.1 for Windows

MacOS

With Version 1.5.2 we leave ActiveTcl from ActiveState and Python from python.org and switch over to homebrew.
This allows to provide native support on future releases of MacOS. Please install TclTk and Python as described in the manual.
MathTools 1.4.3 for Intel-Macs (x86)
MathTools 1.5.1 for M*-Macs (arm) with ActiveTcl and Rosetta
MathTools 1.5.2 for M*-Macs (arm)

Note

On MacOS you might get a security warning.
In that case allow the execution of the application in the security tab of the system settings.

PFotos

PFotos is a little piece of software to make statistics on large amounts of images in different image formats, including raw formats.
PFotos is a stand-alone application that provides statistics on cameras, lenses, aperture and other image information taken from the EXIF data embedded in the images. It is non-destructive and works on large catalogues or directory structures.

QUARTO Learning Test

With QUARTO and the RevealJS plug-in it is easy to make presentations in markdown. Here we offer an extension to RevealJS to easily set up learning tests with single and multiple correct answers. Additionally, help and solutions can be offered to support students.
The extension, its manual and the code of an example can be found on GitHub: Quarto-LearnTest .
